The Monteiro Duo gave their public debut performance last year opening Virginia Campbell’s 2019 Piano Artist Series, and has also had the pleasure of performing the lecture recital “Weber in the flutist’s Imagination” for the Oklahoma Flute Society in. Performing a diverse repertoire of classical and contemporary music, including works by Brazilian artists, the Monteiro Duo has also been invited to perform in Rio de Janeiro in 2021. The members of Monteiro Duo, Lauren and Sergio, have been married since 2018.
Steinway Artist and Director of Piano Activities at the Wanda Bass School of Music, Oklahoma City University, Sergio Monteiro was born in Niteroi, Brazil. He holds Bachelor and Master Degrees from the National School of Music of Rio de Janeiro, where he studied with Myrian Dauelsberg. During these years, he won several Brazilian and other South American piano competitions. In 2000 he was awarded a scholarship by the Ministry of Culture to study at the Eastman School of Music, where he earned his Doctor of Musical Arts under Nelita True.
In 2003, Sergio won the 2nd Annual Martha Argerich International Piano Competition in Buenos Aires. Since then, he has appeared with several orchestras in South America, Europe, North America and Asia under the direction of various conductors such as Charles Dutoit and Rafael Fruhbeck de Burgos. Sergio has played with prestigious orchestras such as the Dresdner Philharmonic, Lubeck Philharmonic, Buenos Ayres Philharmonic and the Kremlin Chamber Orchestra and performed in venues such as the Toronto Center for the Arts, in Canada, the Konzerthaus and the Philharmonic, in Berlin, the Teatro Colon, in Buenos Ayres, the Kennedy Center in Washington and the Martha Argerich Festival in Beppu, Japan.
In addition to performances in Portugal, Switzerland, Italy, Holland, Germany and Brazil, he has lectured, adjudicated and led master classes at schools in North and South America, Europe and Asia, most notably China, where he is invited several times each year. An energetic champion of Brazilian music, Sergio has been honored by many composers with invitations to give premieres of compositions written for and dedicated to him.
In the last four years, he has launched five well-acclaimed albums with Naxos Classics featuring the music of Henrique Oswald, Domenico Scarlatti, Franz Liszt, and Felix Mendelssohn.
Lauren Monteiro is a freelance flutist and teacher in the Oklahoma City area. She has performed with the Oklahoma City Philharmonic and Canterbury Voices, Lansing Symphony Orchestra, Jackson (MI) Symphony Orchestra, Dearborn Symphony Orchestra, and Lebanon (OH) Symphony Orchestra. Dr. Monteiro has performed as soloist with the Lansing Symphony Orchestra, and the Wright State University Chamber Orchestra, and has placed in both regional and national performance competitions. As a music educator, Dr. Monteiro has had the pleasure of teaching collegiate courses in Applied Flute, Aural Skills, Woodwind Methods, Music Appreciation, and Humanities. She is currently a faculty member of Murray State College and Oklahoma City Community College, and a music critic for The Oklahoman. Dr. Monteiro holds a Bachelor of Music from Michigan State University, a Master of Music from Wright State University, and a Doctor of Musical Arts Degree from the University of Oklahoma.
